Hobie Cat

Hobie 17 at Kohimarama

Hobie Cat was a Hobie 17. We never actually named it.

I had bought a Hobie 14 Turbo on an auction site for about $1,000. I hadn't really looked at it well enough, and as time progressed I realised that everything apart from the hulls was in need of replacement. I found a guy who was willing to take her off my hands in part exchange on a Hobie 17.

The Hobie 17 is a much rarer boat that the eponymous Hobie 16. It was designed for solo sailing and had a few interesting features such as a rotating wing mast, retractable dagger boards and outrigger seats. It was pretty fast. On one of the first trips out, off the beach at Kohimarama, one of the shrouds broke. This in turn ripped the sail and broke the boom and mast foot. So before I knew it, I was forced to buy a new mainsail, boom, mast foot and top section and all new rigging. Add to that new trailer wheels and tyres and righting rope and I had replaced most of it.

I didn't use it much after that, I capsized it on the next time out and found it very difficult to right on my own. So I sold it to make way for a cruising boat Bella.
